INCONSTANTIA
The word ‘inconstantia’ means inconstancy. And what we do is certainly not consistent. A modern oboe happily plays along with polyphony; we sing chansons and madrigals without text in the upper voices (whilst text is an essential element). All credit to Bart Schneemann of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, who thought the whole thing up! The Egidius Kwartet sings a four-part song ´a cappella´, then along comes Bart in a piece by the same composer, or in a piece which is somehow connected to the last song. Composers: Daan Manneke, Josquin des Prez, Gheerkin de Hondt, Gallus Carniolus, Clement Janequin, Cornelius Canis, Cipriano de Rore, Jan Pz Sweelinck, Claudio Monteverdi, Bart Visman. |

THE HYDRA
The Hydra was a mythical beast with many heads. Each time a head was cut off, it grew two more. A more perfect symbol for the variety of 16th century polyphony is hard to find. Every time you think you’ve heard everything, something new and unexpected comes up, even more astonishing than the things you have heard already. In this programme the audience is taken on an exciting excursion into the realms of Renaissance music that whets the appetite for further discoveries. Music by Solage, Appenzeller, Gombert, Lassus, Clemens non Papa, Payen, Crecquillon & Sweelinck |

THE LITURGY OF THE SEVEN CANONICAL HOURS
At certain hours of the day, a small choir, called the "College ocf the Canonical Hours", would enter St.Peter's Church to perform a musical sacrament, the Liturgy of the Seven Canonical Hours. Over the years, since the mid 15th century, compositions had been collected in choirbooks, which were large enough to allow the singers to read from one single book. Originally, the Hours were sung by monks, who were affiliated to a monastery church. In large city churches without an affiliated monastery, the office was not sung daily, much to the disappointment of the citizens. So city councils, wealthy citizens and clerics took the intiatieve: They employed secular lay clerks, thereby introducing the ‘Colleges of the Seven Canonical Hours’ in principal churches throughout the country. The Leiden College was the oldest, dating back to 1440. The Liturgy of the Hours in St.Peter's Church consisted of the Matins (5 a.m.), Lauds (6 a.m.), Terce (9 a.m., Sext (12 p.m.), None (3 p.m.), Vespers (5 p.m.) and the Compline (8.p.m.) As we warm up for the third edition of the Leiden Coirbooks project, the Egidius Kwartet & College will sing the Liturgy of the Hours in St.Peter's Church, just as was done in previous times.
